Moving Checklist
Here is aservicechecklist to make sure that
your move goes easily and smoothly.
8 Weeks Before Your Move
__ Get two or threeserviceestimates from
professional movers.
__ Get two or three truck rental estimates ifserviceyourself.
__ Write up an inventory of your homes contents.
__ Get rid of unnecessary items. Give your unwanted items to goodwill or
have a garage sale.
__ Have school records transferred.
__ Decide on a mover or truck rental service. Make reservations.
6 Weeks Before Your Move
__ Fill out a post office change of address
card. You can also do it online
here.
__ Fill out IRS change of address form.
__ Notify people of your change of address. Notify friends, banks,
insurance company, creditors,
magazines, newspapers, doctors, past employers, etc.
__ Clean out closets and drawers.
__ Begin using food from your pantry. Clean it out so you do not have to
move it.
4 Weeks Before Your Move
__ Call your utility companies and have your
service disconnected or transferred to your new home.
__ Buy or find boxes and packing materials. Get boxes, packing tape,
newspaper, etc.
__ Schedule carpet cleaners and/or maids for post move cleanup of your old
home.
__ Pack belongings that you do not need until after your move.
__ Pack important documents separately and keep them in a safe place off
of the truck.
3 Weeks Before Your Move
__ Arrange for childcare forserviceday.
__ Ifserviceyourself, arrange for help from friends.
__ Arrange for transportation of your pets.
__ If you will beserviceinto or out of a high rise, arrange for use of
the freight elevator.
2 Weeks Before Your Move
__ If you plan on driving your car, have it
serviced.
__ Return anything you borrowed, like tools or library books.
__ Transfer and refill your prescriptions.
1 Week Before Your Move
__ Pack aservicebag. Include toiletries,
first aid kit, checkbooks, flashlights and anything else you
might possibly need.
__ Leave a folder of information for the new owners of your home. Include
contractors you've used
and any other crucial names and numbers.
__ Transfer your bank account or close your accounts. Empty safe deposit
boxes.
__ Wash all clothing in preparation for packing.
__ Get rid of or make arrangements forserviceof house plants. Most movers
will not move them.
__ Empty lawnmowers, etc of fuel. Dispose of hazardous materials such as
gas and paint properly.
Day Before Your Move
__ Confirm travel reservations.
__ Confirm the time that yourserviceservice will arrive.
__ Disconnect major appliances. Clean out and defrost refrigerator.
__ Allow movers to pack belongings if you paid for this service.
__ Take beds and other large furniture apart.
__ Have your payment ready for your mover, include money for tip etc.
Moving Day
__ Have someone at your old home to assist
movers.
__ Read the "Bill of Lading" carefully before signing.
__ Double check closets, drawers and attic space for belongings.
__ Want to make friends? Feed your movers. Happy movers are careful
movers.
__ Make sure your house is left secured, lights and water off, doors and
windows locked, etc.
__ Makes sure that your mover has the correct address and directions for
your new place.
