Moving Yourself
Movers may not be for everyone. You may not
want others handling your valuables or maybe you are looking to save a few
bucks. When deciding to move yourself, remember to add up all of the
expenses. Truck and equipment rental can add up. Also consider all of the
hidden costs like gas, pizza and/or beer for your friends and most
importantly your time and sanity. If you are determined to move yourself,
here are a few things to do before your move.
Before Your Move
Reserving A Moving Truck
Reserve your moving truck well in advance. It is not uncommon for a rental
store to get booked up, especially around the end and beginning of the
month. Be sure to find out what it will cost if you have to keep the truck
for an extra day.
Packing
Do not wait until the night before to pack. If you do you will never get
it done in time. Pack items that you wont need for a while well in
advance. Be sure to not pack boxes too heavy. Try to keep the boxes under
fifty pounds. Pack breakables in small boxes by themselves.
Moving
Loading The Truck
Pack the heavier items in the front of the truck. If your truck is so
equipped, load the granny's attic first. Try to load items that you want
off of the truck first, last.
Driving The Truck
Remember, moving trucks do not drive like your personal car or truck. Give
yourself extra time to stop and corner more slowly. If you are leaving the
truck unattended, try to back the truck up so that if it is broken into,
thieves cannot get much out of it. Also purchase a padlock to lock up the
lift gate.
